What British Standard 5970 actually requires, and why it's still the reference code of practice across Qatar and UAE industrial projects.
BS 5970 is the British Standard code of practice for thermal insulation of pipework, ductwork, associated equipment, boilers and storage vessels operating between roughly -100°C and +870°C. Despite being a UK standard, it remains one of the most widely specified codes across GCC industrial and district cooling projects, largely because of the historic influence of British engineering consultancies in the region's oil, gas and utilities sectors.
Even where a project's primary specification is ASTM-based, consultants and main contractors in Qatar and the UAE frequently cross-reference BS 5970 for its detailed treatment of cladding sequencing, condensation control on cold lines, and personnel-protection thickness tables — all of which are directly relevant to district cooling, HVAC and process piping work in the Gulf's climate.
